The gift of time is a non-contracted relationship between the volunteer and Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund.  It is based on trust, and is developed through understanding of mutual expectations.  All volunteer relationships must be of benefit to both the volunteer and the charity.

Volunteers are hugely important to Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund.  However, our Volunteering Scheme does not create opportunities purely for the sake of volunteering.  Each volunteering position helps us to accomplish our mission in a rewarding and cost-effective approach.  For this reason, Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund is committed to developing and nourishing our volunteering scheme.
Underpinning Values

As an essential children’s cancer charity, we:

acknowledge that volunteers play a vital role in enabling us to meet our principle objective: to improve care for children with eye cancer.

believe the volunteering experience should be enjoyable and rewarding, fulfilling both the needs and expectations of the individual volunteer and the charity as a whole.

are committed to developing our fundraising scheme to make volunteering worthwhile for all involved.

afford volunteers rights equal to those enjoyed by other members of Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund, and requests that volunteers fulfil their agreed responsibilities.

Applications will usually include an informal interview, either by telephone or face to face.

The recruitment process exists to:

enable both the applicant and Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund staff to assess the applicant’s suitability for the role, based on requisite skills or expected skills after training.

Although background checks may seem intrusive, they are necessary because:

they afford volunteer an extra degree of credibility.

our supporters must be assured that they and their donations are in safe hands.

they provide the basis of trust for both the volunteer and other team members.

Criminal Records Bureau checks are required for every volunteer whose role is likely to involve regular contact with children and young or vulnerable people, or who are likely to have significant access to charitable funds.

Induction and Training

We always seek to make every volunteer feel welcome.  In so doing, we commit to providing new volunteers with an induction pack, including relevant resources and guidelines.

Volunteers will have direct contact with a named member of staff.  We offer appropriate training for the role being undertaken.  Supervision will be provided and progress monitored, so that additional support can be given as necessary to ensure enjoyment and benefit to both parties.

Recognising Volunteers.

We understand the importance of honouring the vital contributions made by volunteers.  We acknowledge individual volunteers and teams in a number of different ways, but always seek to encourage and enhance these valuable relationships.

Exprenses

We understand and accept that individuals may incur certain costs in their capacity as a volunteer.  We can reimburse reasonable out of pocket expenses, dependent on the submission of receipts.  Our of pocket expenses must be previously agreed with us, and may include travel, refreshments, telephone calls or stationary.

Continued Support “on the job”

We are committed to ensuring our volunteers have a meaningful and enjoyable experience with us.

We acknowledge that we have a duty of care to our volunteers, and will provide all training and supervision necessary to promote the welfare and safety of every volunteer.  Volunteers will always be involved in any changes which are likely to impact their specified role.

We assume no responsibility for the loss or theft of, or damage to, our volunteers’ personal effects.  This includes the use of personal vehicles, and volunteers must ensure they have adequate insurance if using their own car in the process of carrying out their volunteer role.

Volunteers are encouraged to voice their concerns regarding any aspect of their role.  We will always respond to problems fairly, irrespective of the circumstances.  We will always endeavour to reach a solution which is acceptable to all parties involved.

We accept that volunteers do leave their roles.  At departure, we will always wish to know the individual’s reasons for leaving, so that we can make any appropriate improvements to our support systems.  We will also ask if the individual would like to receive updates of our activities, and whether they may consider supporting us in other ways.
