Have regular comprehensive eye examinations.

Some eye conditions can present without any pain or outwardly visible symptoms, whilst others can develop rapidly.
The earlier conditions are detected, the more effectively they can be treated.

Doctors recommend a comprehensive eye examination every two years, but this will vary, depending on your age, existing eye conditions and risk factors.

Risk factors include light-coloured eyes and fair skin, diabetes, obesity, smoking and a family history of eye disease.

Live Healthily

Excess weight, a sedentary lifestyle and high blood pressure are all risk factors for Age related Macula Degeneration and to diabetes, which can lead to diabetic retinopathy.

Keeping active and eating a healthy diet will help protect against the onset and progression of these conditions.

Dark leafy greens and citrus fruits are especially good for the eyes.  For more information about good sources of vitamins A, C and E, beta-carotene and zinc, see our
Eye Nutrition page.
