Valentine Fun
It's that time of year again when the card shops turn red and pink with gifts and messages for the ones we love.

Here are two fun activities you can do to make a special gift for your mum, dad, brother, sister, granny, grandpa, or a special friend.  There are also some anogram sheets to keep your brain busy.

Chocolate Coated Strawberries

You will need:
• 8oz of semi sweet chocolate.
• 1 container of strawberries (or other fruit)
• Waxed paper
• A baking tray or cookie sheet
• Glass bowl
• Saucepan (if using hob)
• Rubber spatula
• Microwave or hob.
Chocolate coated strawberries.
Directions:

1) Wash the strawberries (leaving the stems on) and dry thoroughly.  This is very important as water droplets will seize the melted chocolate, preventing it from setting later on.

2) Cover a cookie sheet with waxed paper

3) Place the chocolate into a glass bowl and melt.  You can do this on a hob or in a microwave oven.

Hob method: Fill a saucepan about 1/3 full with water and allow to boil.  Place the bowl on top of saucepan (obviously the bowl must be bigger than the pan) over a medium heat and stir the chocolate as it melts.

Microwave method: heat the chocolate on high power for 30 seconds.  Remove and briefly stir.  Repeat these steps several times until the chocolate is beginning to resemble a lumpy soup.  Stir until the lumps are gone. Let the warmth of the bowl melt the remaining chocolate pieces to avoid over-microwaving it.

4) Dip the dry strawberries into melted chocolate, swirling them around to ensure they are well coated.  Then place them on the waxed paper.

5) Set the strawberries aside for about 2 hours to let the chocolate harden.

6) If some of the melted chocolate remains, cut up some other fruit, dip into the chocolate and eat right away (like a chocolate fondue).
Finger Paint Hearts

You will need:
• paper
• scissors
• stapler
• finger paint (or tempra paint and brush)
• cotton wool or shredded newspaper
• string, wool or ribbon (for hanging).
Finger paint heart.
Directions:

1) Print two copies of the template, linked below.  Do not cut it out yet.

2) Decorate one side of both templates with finger paints or a brush and tempra paint.  Even the youngest children can get involved with this part of the craft.

3) Allow both hearts to dry thoroughly before cutting them out.

4) Staple around the edge of the hearts, but leave an opening at the top (to stuff the hearts).

5) Fill the hearts with cotton wool or shredded paper (children aged 3+ will enjoy helping with this step).  Be careful not to over-fill the heart, so that you can close it up.

8) Staple the heart closed.

7) Attach a piece of string or other material to the top of the hear, so that it can be hang from the ceiling
